Whoa....That Was A Close One!

Today was the day I had planned to take my Mother, age 88, to renew her driver's license. How I was dreading this day! My Mother hasn't driven in several years and she no longer owns an automobile. But she really, I do mean really, wanted to maintain a current license. I knew she needed a state issued ID, for identification purposes (flying, etc), but I had nightmares of her Aid taking her to the car dealership to buy a "little" car. I was nervous and she was nervous too. But I must say she looked great. Her hair was perfect, she choose a coral outfit with pearl jewelry. She told me that she photographs well in coral. It brought back memories of taking my two daughters to the DMV when they each turned 16. Lots of nervous energy, nervous laughter and they looked perfect for their pictures! Well, as luck would have it, thank you Lady Luck, all of the computer systems at the DMV were down - the server, everything. Oh shucks....LOL.
So instead, we went to lunch and did some shopping. When I took her home, of course, she asked what day would I like to take her back to the DMV. I told her to let me know when she was ready again and I would take her. I know she will probably call and ask about tomorrow or another day this week, but at least for today it's over!!! She is just the cutest!

Happy Monday!

  1. My mother has not driven for 7 yrs and she wants to again . In Feb she had an aortic aneurysm dissection so that has delayed things too. She is79. My father is 84 and did not renew his liscence because in Sept he had a stroke. Both are coming along very well but not driving.

  2. Poignant post. I know you will help her navigate all the 'getting older' emotions gracefully.

  3. That's a very sweet story of a day in your life. And putting a good spin on what's really a frustrating time for everyone.
My mom's license expired while she was in the hospital, which means she has to go through the entire thing from scratch, with vision certification, driving test, written test, etc. Quite frustrating considering she could have just gone down and done the minimum renewal if she'd been up and around at the time. It's such a bummer when one incident snowballs into a whole series of problems, but you're right to put things in the best light.
Good luck with all of it!

    1. The story about your Mom's license is so frustrating! You are right - one incident snowballs into a bigger problem. The transition of going from child to care taker is trying for all of us that are lucky enough to still have our parents. Thanks for sharing! Good luck to you too!!!
